Consequences for an Unbalanced Tyre
One can notice an out-of-balance at a tyre of a motor truck at the steering shaft in particular by a “flittering” steering wheel and an unusual vibration of the vehicle. This occur especially at a speed between 80 and 120 kilometres/hour.
Further negative consequences are:
- an uneven tyre abrasion causes an increased waste of the tyre
- an increased waste of bearing components of the chassis
- a dragging of the steering components by centrifugal forces
- a strong force to the shock absorbers
- a reduced driving comfort
The driver is not able to notice unbalances at the rear axles and trailer but they produce the same negative results.
Consequences at a stealthy loss of pressure
Tyres could get porous – especially at the thread of wheel – by increasing age and a heavy duty mileage. The porosity of the tyre causes a stealthy loss of pressure. It is strongly necessary to make a frequent and regular checking of the air pressure. Unfortunately this is no always possible because of matters of time and close time schedules.
Further negative consequences of a less compressed air are:
- a faster tyre wear
- an increased gasoline consumption
- burst tyres, debonding of the thread surface because of overheating
- down times and waiting periods until the emergency service arrives
- higher accident risk
Consequences at Penetrations of Foreign Objects
A flat tyre is always unpleasant – it costs time and money. About 50 % of the Western European motor trucks drive without spare wheel, so save weight. A tyre rotation can be life threatening, especially on the side facing the street. Waiting for the emergency service spends time and is expensive.
